Context study / NEXUS
NEXUS by Maurizio Valch in a Contemporary Design Space
Resting directly on the floorboards, stripped of the consecrating distance imposed by frames and exhibition easels, the emerald matter of NEXUS claims an inescapable physical condition that places it closer to architecture than to pure visuality. In this staging, the large-format canvas does not float in a neutral suspension, but rests against a massive textured plaster wall in a design studio, forcing the observer to register the actual tilt of its plane. This oblique angle breaks the usual safety distance of the contemplative gaze, compelling the spectator’s body to negotiate its scale and gravity with a three-centimeter-thick work that no longer simulates a window, but acts as a monolithic presence. The natural overhead light entering obliquely from the skylights above skims the surface of the work, catching the relief of the incised lines and granting a volumetric density to the small crimson blocks that seem anchored to the drift of their horizontal strokes.
